We got a rental car, this time a Suzuki Swift and drove into Athens, which proved to be as crazy as it was in Roma. Lots of narrow streets and crazy drivers. I am so thankful that Dave is a great driver and can handle the driving here. I would not attempt it. We get to our hotel and check in. The hotel is beautiful with a direct view of the Acropolis. There is a roof top bar that is just wonderful, in fact, this is where I am sitting as I type this. The breeze is cool and the lit up Acropolis and a full moon are the back drop. It is AMAZING!
We drop our backpacks and head off into town for something to eat. The hotel desk clerk (probably the owner as well but didn't ask) sent us to a fabulous family run place (we found out that for 130 years in fact) near our hotel. We met the owner, had fabulous Souvlaki, Lamb Shish Kabob, Baklava and plenty of wine. They also kept bringing us free shots of some clear liquid liquor that proved to be very high in alcohol content!

So then we ventured up to the Acropolis. What a beautiful site it is. Dave was enamored and kept talking about a certain history teacher that taught him so much about this area and he couldn't believe he was here. After admiring the view for quite a while we head back down to our hotel.
From the Acropolis we could here chanting and thought that maybe it was a soccer game or something. Once we get back into town we realize it is a demonstration!! So we quickly skirt the demonstrators, although it seemed peaceful and plenty of police were around. We get back to the hotel and chat for a bit with the hotel desk clerk and then head to our room for a siesta :).
So tomorrow we will get up early to start our coastal drive over to Lefkada, where we pick up the catamaran and embark on a journey of a lifetime through the western Greek Ionian Islands. I am not sure what my internet access will be on the boat or as we port on the islands so I may be posting sporadically but will definitely post when I can. The pictures are going to be incredible!!

It is cool to think while I was enjoying the full in moon in Waldport Oregon you were enjoying the same moon a day later. It really makes me feel like our world is truly so small.
